What Are Employer Obligations When They Are Offering Health Insurance?

When it comes to employer sponsored health insurance, the employer definitely have obligations that they should meet to ensure that the quality and continuity of the health insurance will be available to the employer’s workforce. One responsibility that an employer must assume is choosing a reasonable health insurance plan for its workforce. By doing this, they must make sure that the health insurance plan covers necessary services, such as doctor’s visits, hospital stays, emergency room access, and prescription drugs just to name a few.

It is also important for employers to keep the premium low and affordable for its employees. An employer should cover a reasonable amount towards the health insurance plan of its staff. A reasonable amount would be to pay the full premium of the medical insurance plan for the employees. This is important because employers should be responsible in making sure that each one of its employees have access to medical care at the very least. Now, it is also important for employers to make sure that the medical plan being provided to employees have an option of adding dependents.

However, employers should not be responsible for paying dependents’ medical insurance premium. Instead, it should be the full responsibility of the employees who choose to cover their dependents. When it comes to other plans that would fall under health insurance, such as dental and vision insurance, it should be the responsibility of the employer to provide these plans to their workforce. However, responsibility of paying the premium for these services for both employees and dependents should belong to the employees. Employers need to act as liason between the insurance carriers and their employees. There may be issues that employees may face, such as problems with receiving services, getting claims approved, etc. that they may need assistance with in resolving.

This is where the employer needs to step in the picture and advocate for its employees, even if it means contacting the insurance carriers directly and work on solutions to resolve the employees’ issues. Lastly, employers need to make sure that medical insurance being provided for its employees will be available continuously. In other words, employers are responsible for being good benefits administrators by paying the premiums in a timely manner.
